The Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem

Fri 28 March to Sun 6 April 2008 – during the school holidays

We will be staying in a hotel built in the treetops above the Amazon River in flood within the largest rainforest in the world! We will then contrast this magnificent natural ecosystem with the internationally renowned cosmopolitan city of Rio de Janeiro.

Activities: piranha fishing, navigate through the equatorial rainforest by canoe, visit an indigenous tribe (optional), swim on the Amazon basin river, feeding the Pink Dolphins, swimming with the Pink Dolphins, jungle trekking, alligator spotting, sunrise tour. In Rio de Janeiro: visit to Maracana stadium(optional); visit the Sugar Loaf by cable car; cycle along Copacabana , Ipanema and Leblon beach; tour to the top of Corcovado Mountain; visit an open air arts and crafts market, evening dance and music show (optional), hang gliding (optional). 

Educational focus: the significance of biodiversity as a global resource; environmental stress and global degradation, the impact of tourism and the local community.  In Rio de Janeiro: the causes and effects of the “favelas” (shanties); and for those who like football there will be an opportunity to play it with a real Brazilian style!
