Berlin, Germany - Sun 18 to Thurs 22 May 2008 – during the Academic Week Programme
Our trip to Berlin will lead us through the most interesting historical features of this exciting and iconic city, and in doing so unfold the history of the twentieth century. Trips, activities and educational input will take us through the incredible changes seen in Berlin over the last century. The centre of the Prussian war machine, the decadence of the 30’s, the core of National Socialist Fascism and it’s atrocities, the divisions of the Cold War and the union of Europe in the latter part of the century. No other city in the world more characterises and bears the scars of this turbulent century.
Activities: map reading and orientation, bike riding, historical seminars and student presentation. Educational visits include: The Story of Berlin multimedia museum, Allied Museum, Berlin Wall Documentation Centre, Sachsenhausen concentration camp, Checkpoint Charlie museum (the cold war museum), The Reichstag (Parliament) Modern politics in Germany, Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz. Farewell dinner at the top of Berliner Fernsehturm revolving tower (approx. 267m high).
Educational focus: Empire and Decadence, the Second World War – the final solution, The Cold War and the Reunification and the European Union. History and Culture with the practice of the German Language. Students will engage with the past in a personally meaningful and real way.
